N. Ruthardt Munger created her interpretation of the mid 1800’s American Spiritual for the 2004 Lyon and Healy International Pop and Jazz Competition in which she was awarded 1st place. The piece begins with a straightforward theme, then seamlessly moves through a jazz waltz variation, key changes, and a final “military feel” variation. The showstopper of the piece is the “walls falling down”- a four-octave chromatic scale made achievable through a systematic pattern set of pedal maneuvers.
