N. Ruthardt Munger created her interpretations of the mid 1800’s American Spiritual for the 2004 Lyon and Healy International Pop and Jazz Competition in which she was awarded 1 st place. The piece begins with a straight forward theme, then seamlessly moves through a jazz waltz variation, key changes, and a final “military feel” variation. The showstopper of the piece is the “walls falling down”- a four octave chromatic scale made achievable through a systematic pattern set of pedal maneuvers.
